John P. Hulsing

John Paul Hulsing, 81, of Baileyville, KS, died Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born June 26, 1924, the son of John G. and Mary Jordan Hulsing on the family homestead north of Baileyville. John attended Sacred Heart School at Baileyville and worked on the family farm. He helped take care of his brother, Nicolas, who had Bright’s Disease, and his family.
On February 1, 1945, he entered the U.S. Navy. He served on several ships in the Pacific and in the occupation of Japan. On July 9, 1946 he was discharged and returned to the family farm. He operated a dairy besides farming and raising livestock. He also cared for his mother. In the spring of 1995 he retired and moved into Baileyville. He entered Life Care Center in Seneca in January of 2005.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville and served on the church committee. He joined the Knights of Columbus #1769 in Seneca at age 18 and maintained membership his while life. In 1954 he joined the Farmer’s Union and was an active member serving as state director for 10 years. He was also a member of the R.R. Hendricks Post #214 of the American Legion at Axtell and the National Catholic Right to Life since 1957. John was a member of a citizen group instrumental in widening and curbing the streets in Baileyville and fencing the Sacred Heart Cemetery. He enjoyed working on his family genealogy.
He is survived by a sister, Rosemary Schmitz of Seneca, and many nephews and nieces.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Raphael Hulsing; three brothers, Francis Hulsing, an infant, Nicholas Hulsing, and Anthony “Tony” Hulsing; and two sisters, Helen Koch and Barbara Deters.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 AM Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Burial will be with military honors in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for the Sacred Heart Church Improvement Fund.
