Galen L. Stallbaumer, 71, of Corning, KS, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

He was born July 11, 1933, on a farm southwest of Kelly, the son of Elmer G. and Josephine F. Rethman Stallbaumer. In 1940 the family moved to the farm northwest of Corning where he and his brother presently lived. He attended St. Bede’s School in Kelly and St. Patrick’s School in Corning, and helpd on the family farm.

In July of 1953, he entered the U.S. Army. He was a carpenter with the 826th Engineers serving in Newfoundland. After his discharge in June of 1955, he returned to the farm and began work with the Nemaha County Road and Bridge Department for 43 years. At the time of his retirement in July of 1998, he was a supervisor and inspector. He continued to farm with his brother Larry and also raised cattle.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Corning, where he had served on the church committee for 3 years and also as a money counter for the collection on Sundays. he was also a member of the Arthur L. Mills Post of the American Legion where he served as commander at Corning; and the Knights of Columbus #1769 at Seneca. Galen enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Survivors are two brothers, Lawrence “Larry” Stallbaumer of Corning and Gerald Stallbaumer of Topeka; six sisters, Patricia Lierz of Baileyville, Darlene Roeder of Seneca, Jo Ella Ronnebaum of Centralia, and Mary Beems, Diane McConnaughey and Linda Feldkamp, all of Topeka.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald on September 7, 1980.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Friday at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning, where he will lie in state from 9:30 AM before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Thursday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given for St. Patrick’s Cemetery or St. Patrick’s Church Handicapped Fund, and sent in care of the family.
