Alvin R. Olberding, 76, of Baileyville, KS, died Wednesday evening, December 11, 2002, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He had been in ill health for several years, and was diagnosed with cancer in October 2002. His death was due to complications following surgery.

He was born May 30, 1926 on a farm north of Baileyville, the son of Henry F. and Mary J. Runnebaum Olberding. He grew up there, attended the Dewey Country School, and worked on the family farm and other area farms. For many years he helped his dad on the family farm. Alvin was the owner and the operator of Olberding Truck Line from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. He hauled livestock and grain. He began work for Nemaha County in 1967 where he worked on the Road and Bridge Department driving a gravel truck. He retired in 1991.

On September 13, 1956, he married Lorene Koelzer at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. She survives of the home. They lived north of Baileyville for three years, and moved into Baileyville in 1959.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville.

Survivors besides his wife Lorene are a daughter, Alice Payne of Oneida; a brother, Henry Olberding, Jr. of Beatrice, NE; four sisters, Helen Bevans of Harrisburg, OR, Frances Boltz, Marie E. Stallbaumer, and Millie Bontrager, all of Seneca.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Cyril on February 22, 1980, Aloysius on August 12, 1983, and Leonard on December 27, 1992.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given for Sacred Heart Church, and sent in care of the family.
