Frederick Mack Nichols
Seneca, KS
02/26/1945 - 04/29/2015
Frederick “Mack” Nichols, 70, of Seneca, died Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Crestview Nursing and residential Living in Seneca.
Frederick “Mack” Nichols was born on February 26, 1945 in Rippey, Iowa to Harold and Phyllis Leonor Woodley Nichols. He received his education in Sheridan, Iowa.
He entered the U.S. Army on December 3, 1964. He received his Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, which he often referred to as the coldest spot in the United States. He was a Demolition Specialist during the Vietnam War from 1965-1966 and was assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion USATC 5th Company. He served on the ground exploding railroads, building, tunnels and caves; and was exposed to Agent Orange on three different occasions. He was attached to an Infantry unit and earned the rank of Sergeant; he was honorably discharged on July 20, 1970. Mack did not like to “let grass grow under his feet” after his time in the service; he worked in various states. He used his military explosive training working for Rock Quarries.
Mack enjoyed breaking wild mustang horses, target shooting, making Jim Bowie Knives encrusted with mother of pearl and turquoise and leather holsters. He was a kid at heart and children and animals were drawn to him. He believed in standing up for those who could not protect themselves; and was a quiet nice guy until someone messed with his family—he was very protective of his family and those he loved. He considered himself lucky and found enjoyment in going to the Casino where he usually won; he relished a good Poker game.
Mack has five brothers, Larry Nichols Ada, Kansas, Harold Nichols of Beattie, Kansas, James Nichols Colorado Springs, Colorado, Phillip Nichols of Ada, Kansas and Miriam Nichols of Los Angeles, California; and a sister, Tina Sedbeck of Iowa City, Iowa. His brother Harlen died at the age of 50.
Mack has chosen cremation with a service at Crestview Nursing and Residential in Seneca, it will be held at 2 PM Monday May 4, 2015. Burial will be in the Fort Riley Cemetery on May 11, 2015 at 2 PM with military honors.
