Celestine B. "Sally" Hulsing
Kelly, Kansas

Celestine B. “Sally” Hulsing, 67, of Kelly, Kansas, died Thursday, July 30, 1981 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, where he had been admitted the same evening due to an apparent heart attack.
“Sally,” as he was known to his family and friends, was born on April 16, 1914, to Henry and Ida Gellhaus Hulsing near St. Benedict, Kansas. He was one of 13 children. After attending St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict, he farmed with his father.
On October 28, 1941, he married Velma Stansell at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. Sally entered the U.S. Army in September of 1942. That December he was sent overseas and served in Africa, Italy, Sicily and Germany. In November of 1945, he was discharged and returned to Nemaha County, Kansas.
Sally and Velma bought the Ketter and Vondemkamp General Store in Kelly, and operated it as the Hulsing Store until April of 1979. Sally did cabinetwork with his father-in-law, James Stansell, who taught him the trade. He also farmed and was employed by several contracting companies in the area.
He was a member of St. Bede’s Church in Kelly and the St. Bede’s Society at the church, the Earle W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus Post #1769, both in Seneca, and the Marshall County Disabled Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Hulsing.
Survivors are his wife Velma of the home; a daughter, Kathleen (Daniel) Reeves of St. Joseph, Missouri; two granddaughters; his mother, Ida Hulsing of Seneca; five brothers, Emil and Bernard Hulsing of Seneca, Victor and Joseph Hulsing of Omaha and Henry Hulsing of Topeka; seven sisters, Henrietta Holthaus and Marceline Meyer, both of Axtell, Mary Stallbaumer of Seneca, Florence Kohake and Mildred Kohake, both of Goff, Ida Sextro of Kansas City, Missouri, and Elsie McGuire of West Covina, California.
Rosaries were prayed on Saturday and Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, August 2, at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly by Fr. Vincent Wavada.
Burial was in St. Bede’s Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Earle W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion. Pallbearers were Mark Hulsing, Duane Holthaus, Steve Stallbaumer, Mike Kemp, Greg Hulsing and Jim Meyer.
