Baileyville, KS
12/25/1934 - 02/01/2007
Robert H. “Bob” Schulte, 72, of Baileyville, KS, died Thursday, February 1, 2007 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was transferred there after suffering a head injury which resulted from a fall on the ice at his home Wednesday evening.
Robert was born December 25, 1934 in Axtell, KS, the son of Melvin and Anna Stueve Schulte. He grew up in Baileyville, and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1952. He entered the U.S. Marines in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Pendleton, CA. serving as a sergeant for his country until 1956. He received the National Defense Service Award and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, he made his permanent home in Baileyville.
While in the Marines, he met his future wife. On July 27, 1957 he married Anita Fuentes at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in San Francisco, CA; she survives the home. They raised four children in Baileyville. Robert took over the bus service from his father, transporting schoolchildren for the Baileyville District #451 for over 42 years, a job he held until his death. He also owned the service station Bob’s Conoco in Baileyville and Schulte Oil, a fuel delivery service, for many years.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville, and the Earle W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion in Seneca for 16 years. Bob served on the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Board during the development and building of the new hospital. Other boards he served on were the Rural Water District Board, Marion Township Board, and the Sacred Heart Church Board. Throughout his life Bob was active in his community. He had many interests and enjoyed traveling with his wife, drinking coffee with his buddies, fishing, and boating. Robert was an avid reader, loved to polka, and treasured time with his grandchildren and his dog Rascal.
Bob was always a very giving person, donating over 11 gallons of blood over his lifetime. Even in his passing he continued his giving tradition, becoming an organ donor so he will continue to live on in many people.
Survivors besides his wife are two sons, Robert of Hoyt and Brent of Baileyville; two daughters, Michele Moran of Broken Arrow, OK and Rene Feldkamp of Seneca; and 12 grandchildren. Three sisters also survive him, Helen Reinsch of Kansas City, MO, Cora Ann Heiman of Gladstone, MO, and Darlene Haug of Topeka.
Preceding Robert in death were his parents; two brothers Gerald and Kenneth; his sister Rosemary and an infant sister Waunita.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 AM Monday, February 5, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 & 7 PM Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
