Raymond A. “Ray” Huninghake, 67, of Seneca, KS, died suddenly Tuesday night, March 20, 2007, at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born in Axtell on July 23, 1939, the son of Herman and Anne Osterhaus Huninghake. He attended St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict and later earned his GED while in the service. After school, he worked for Emmett Bergman Repair and for Anderson-Oxendale Rock Quarry. In addition, he also worked as a hired man for area farmers until he joined the Army Reserve when he was 22 years old. He served in the reserves for six years from 1961-1968. After service to his country, he took jobs with Hopp Welding in Sabetha and for Justin Rottinghaus’s gravel pit. Ray then worked at Gleason Chevrolet for six years. He also worked at Gambles Hardware Store. Then in 1971 Ray became self-employed when he opened Ray’s Appliance Store on Highway 36; he later added DeLaval Dairy Equipment to his business. He sold the appliance and dairy implement store in 1992. He also owned and operated the Seneca Twin Theater on Main Street from 1983 to the present.
On November 22, 1962, he married Rosann Deters at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They enjoyed 44 loving years of marriage.
He loved to read and take photographs. Ray had a special interest in farming and farm equipment. He was fascinated with electronics and had a knack for being able to fix things. He was a compassionate man who had the courage to stand up for what he believed. He took pleasure in life and enjoyed traveling to Branson, MO to attend shows and go dancing.
Ray was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph Society, and the Nemaha County Historical Society, all in Seneca. He also served for several years on the Glacier Hills Council, for the development and preservation of Nemaha County. He was instrumental in the Marion Hall Restoration Project, and loved to help with Seneca’s Double Nickel Day. Ray was also actively involved with the Seneca Chamber of Commerce.
Ray is survived by his wife Rosann of the home; his daughter Barbara Huninghake of Seneca; and a brother Leonard of Baileyville.
