Marie L. Savago, 98, of Seneca, KS, died early Tuesday morning, August 7, 2007, at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca, where she had been a resident since 2002.
Marie was born March 26, 1909, the daughter of William and Louise Searing Wright, on a farm southeast of Baileyville, KS. She attended Globe Country School. Later she moved with her family and attended Boardman School northwest of Centralia, Humphrey’s Mo. School, Wetmore School, Rose Hill School, and graduated from 8th grade at Corning. She lived with her aunt and uncle, Bruce and Margaret Brower, while attending Centralia High School, but became ill with pneumonia and could not finish. Later she attended Corning High School.
On September 14, 1927, she married Floyd Savago in Holton. They lived with Floyd’s parents five miles southwest of Corning for a year and a half, where they helped farm. They then farmed their own property west of Corning for a year. In 1930 they moved back to the Savago family farm and lived there six years. In 1936 they moved to a farm south of Centralia. They also farmed southeast of Corning for two years, west of Goff for nine years and southeast of Centralia for three years. They moved into Corning in 1956.
Marie always enjoyed reading and in 1957 became the first librarian at the Corning Library. She held that position for 15 years until she and her husband moved to the Terrace Heights apartments in Seneca in 1972. Her husband Floyd preceded her in death on September 7, 1980.
Marie was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Societyat the church in Seneca. She was a member and past president for nine years of Senior Circle. She was also a member of the Friendly Circle Club at Corning. She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, and helping on the farm. She also did all types of fancywork and crocheted afghans.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Stallbaumer of Hoyt, KS; two sisters, Alma Snodgrass of Great Bend, KS and Evelyn Bailey of Holton, KS; a brother Harold of Salina, KS; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger on September 1, 1938; a daughter Mary Louise Koelzer on October 2, 1992; and a great-grandson, Ryan Koelzer in 2004.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM Friday, August 10, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Thursday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be at Coal Creek Cemetery southwest of Corning.
Memorial contributions may be given for the Corning Library or Sts. Peter & Paul School, and sent in care of the family.
