Margaret H. Hasenkamp

Seneca, KS

Margaret H. Hasenkamp, 95, of Seneca, KS, died early Saturday morning, December 8, 2007, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Margaret was born August 7, 1912, on a farm east of St. Benedict, KS, the daughter of Louis J. and Mary Engelken Rettele. Margaret helped on the family farm, going via horse and buggy to St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict, where she graduated from the eighth grade.

On April 14, 1937, she married Alfred B. Hasenkamp at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. As a young couple, they farmed near Axtell and Centralia for several years. In 1942, they moved to their farm south of Corning. Margaret also worked at the Slim Maker Dress Factory in Holton for ten years. Her husband Alfred died March 4, 1977, just short of their 40th wedding anniversary. Margaret moved to Seneca in 1983, and in 2002 became a resident of Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.

Margaret was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society in Seneca, and a former member of St. Patrick’s Church and Altar Society in Corning. She enjoyed sewing of any kind – crocheting, quilting and embroidering. She also loved cooking and baking. Margaret cherished being a grandmother and took delight in the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Robert “Bob” Hasenkamp of Soldier, KS; two daughters, Noreen Steinlage and Jane Henry, both of Seneca; a sister, Mildred Melcher of Atchison; 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Marilee Jerome and Grace Area; a brother, Edwin Rettele; and three sisters, Eileen Herr, Rachel Deters and Florina Macke.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Monday, December 10 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Corning. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
