Robert J. Haug
Baileyville, KS
06/30/1919 - 12/29/2007
Robert J. Haug, 88, of Baileyville, KS, died early Saturday afternoon, December 29, 2007 at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.
Robert was born June 30, 1919, the son of Frank and Mary Strathman Haug on a farm southwest of Baileyville. He attended Sacred Heart School in Baileyville, graduating from the eighth grade. Robert’s mother lost her husband early on, and Robert helped her manage the farm and care for his five younger siblings.
On February 27, 1946, he married Alma Bergman in St. Benedict; the couple enjoyed 62 years of marriage. They raised seven children on a farm southwest of Baileyville, living on the farm for 38 years, raising crops and cattle. Robert also was a carpenter, building almost all the sheds on the farm. He loved to stay busy and it gave him great pleasure to help a neighbor in need.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville and enjoyed helping with the upkeep and maintenance of the church. Robert served on several boards, including the Black Vermillion Watershed, the Baileyville Rural Water Board, and the Baileyville Sewer Board.
In 1983, Alma and Robert moved to a new home in Baileyville, where he took pleasure in mowing the lawn, fishing, cutting wood with his chainsaw and playing intense games of pitch and poker with family and friends. Another favorite pastime was cracking walnuts. Robert always kept his family supplied with the freshest walnuts.
He was preceded by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Cletus; and three sisters, Veronica Macke, Sister Cleta Haug O.S.B., and Marie Roeder.
Survivors besides his Alma wife of the home are his seven children, Doris Haug of Sabetha, Leon Haug of Frankfort, Elmer Haug of Centralia, Jane Niehues of Goff, Laura Bock of Beatrice, NE, Tom Haug of Vermillion and Sharon Enneking of Seneca; four sisters, Margaret Buessing of Baileyville, Rosella Kohake of Seneca, Sister Laura Haug O.S.B. of Atchison, and Cleta Wietharn of Clay Center; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Monday, December 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, or for Masses in Robert’s behalf, and may be sent to the family.
