Urban Francis Haug, 84, of Seneca, KS, died early Tuesday morning, March 18, 2008, shortly after arriving at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

He was born in Seneca on February 6, 1924, the son of Luke and Clara Engelken Haug. He attended St. Benedict School and helped on the family farm. In 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.

On February 4, 1948, he married Darlene Strathman at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Recently they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After marriage they farmed north of Seneca until 1953, and then moved to a farm west of Corning. In 1993, they retired and settled in Seneca. His wife Darlene survives of the home.

Urban was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and the Knights of Columbus in Seneca, and a former member of St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. Other memberships include the American Legion Post #21 in Seneca and a former member of the American Legion Post #37 in Corning. He served on the Board of Directors of the Vermillion State Bank, the Board of Recycling for Nemaha County, the Nemaha County Board of Supervisors, the Upper Black Vermillion Watershed District #37, and was a volunteer for the Natural Resources Conservation Services and the Nemaha County Conservation District.

Urban also delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered at Coffee House, was a substitute driver for the senior citizen bus route, and ran bingo games. Besides all his volunteering, he was an avid outdoorsman, fished, bowled, and played golf. He was a friendly, outgoing man who will be missed by the entire community.

Survivors besides his wife Darlene include a son, Gary and his wife Mary of Seneca; a daughter, Judy Adams and her husband Roger of Corning; two brothers, Lambert Haug of Seneca and Regis Haug of Denver, CO; three sisters, Erma Osterhaus and Delores Boeckman, both of Seneca, and Marceil Rottinghaus of Centralia; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son Joseph in 1953.

Rosaries will be prayed at 7 PM Wednesday and 2 PM Thursday on March 19 & 20 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 AM Friday at St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery in Corning, with military honors will be provided by the Corning and Seneca American Legion Posts. Due to Holy Week, a memorial Mass will be offered after Easter. He will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home after 4:30 PM on Wednesday.
