Jacquelyn L. “Jackie” Strohmeyer

Axtell, KS

Jacquelyn L. “Jackie” Strohmeyer, 79, of Axtell, KS, died early Saturday morning, October 11, 2008 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Jackie was born on July 3, 1929 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO, to Frank and Elnora Carlin Schafer. She graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in Seneca in 1947.

On June 2, 1948, she married Donald F. Strohmeyer at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They moved to Axtell in 1949, where they owned and operated Don’s Rexall Drug Store. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage before Don’s death on March 30, 2001. Jackie also worked for the Huddle Restaurants in Seneca and Marysville and the Axtell Grocery Store.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Guild in Axtell. She was also a volunteer EMT in Axtell. Jackie enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, reading, and playing bridge and Bunco. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her dog. She was a talented artist, with over 25 of her own oil paintings on display in her home.

She is survived by her four sons, Don and Doug Strohmeyer, both of Omaha, NE, Dan Strohmeyerof Manhattan, KS, and Damian Strohmeyer of Lexington, MA; her daughter, Donna Kinley of Vernon Hills, IL; two sisters, Charlotte VanValkenburg of Manhattan and Doris Power of Freemont, NE; 14 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Frank Schafer Jr. during WWII, an infant brother Charles, and her sister Bernice McEchron in 2004.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 PM Tuesday, October 14, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, and at 7:30 PM that evening at St. Michael’s Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Wednesday at St. Michael’s Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given in Jackie’s memory for St. Michael’s School or the Hanover Hospital, and sent in care of the family.
