Mary Anna Rottinghaus
St. Benedict, Kansas

Mary Anna Rottinghaus, 75, of rural St. Benedict, Kansas, died Saturday morning, January 15, 1944, at the home of her son John. She had been ill for a month with dropsy.
Mary was born on June 8, 1884 in Muhlen, Steinfeld, Oldenburg, Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ignatz Sudbeck. As a very young child she arrived as an immigrant with her family in Nemaha County, Kansas.
She was married on April 14, 1896 to Herman “Henry” Rottinghaus at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, Kansas.
Mary had lived on the same farm for 48 years, which later became the home of her son John. Her husband Henry preceded her in death on September 1, 1932.
She is survived by her children, Tony and his wife Nora Rottinghaus, Wilhemina “Minnie” and husband Jacob Rennenger, Benedict and wife Marcella Rottinghaus, John I. and wife Ethel Rottinghaus, Ignatius and wife Frances Rottinghaus, all of St. Benedict; two brothers, Clem and Anton Sudbeck of St. Benedict; a sister, Josephine Siess; and 22 grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Osterhaus, and three daughters who died in infancy; a sister, Mrs. Anton Fangman; and two brothers, Frank and John Sudbeck.
Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday morning, January 17, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, officiated by Fr. Cyril Bayer O.S.B.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Joseph Hammes, Clarence Haug, George Schmitz, John Rilinger, Sylverius Schmitz and Aloysius Stallbaumer. Honorary pallbearers were Ignatius Sudbeck, Linus Sudbeck, George Fangman, Albert Rottinghaus, Joseph Kruse, and Frank Runnebaum.
