George H. Haug, 39, of Seneca, KS, formerly of St. Benedict, died Wednesday, October 9, 1940 at a Topeka hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born May 6, 1901 near St. Benedict. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a tank corps mechanic in the aftermath of World War I. He was stationed in Baltimore, MD and rose to the rank of sergeant. After his discharge he worked in construction, traveling to various locations wherever there was work. Over time he developed his craft as a bricklayer.

On January 5, 1931 he married Wilhelmina C. “Minnie” Stallbaumer at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict.

He was known as a quiet, philosophical man of such a gentle nature that everyone liked him. He had recently moved to Seneca with his wife Minnie and their four-year-old son Maurice. They purchased the former A.A. Martin residence in Seneca and were in the the process of remodeling it.

George took ill suddenly while on a bricklaying job for a new church in Ottawa, KS. He was taken to the Security Benefit Association Hospital in Topeka where he died shortly thereafter of a grave stomach condition.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict and the Knights of Columbus Council 1769 of Seneca.

Besides his wife and young son, his is survived by three brothers, Andrew Haug of Axtell and Joe Haug of Kansas City, and Jack Haug of Burns, OR; and two sisters, Mrs. August Kramer of Lillis and Mrs. Rinhold Widman of Seneca.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Frank Mohrman.

Mass of Chrisian Burial will be offered at 8 AM Friday, October 11, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
