Sara E. Hammes, 83, of Seneca died on Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Sara was born on September 29, 1934, in Teutopolis, Illinois the daughter of Joseph and Kathleen Sharpe Habing. She attended school and graduated from Teutopolis High School in 1953. After graduation, she went to Nursing School and graduated as a RN. During her career she worked at KU Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital, both in Kansas City, mentoring and teaching in those hospitals.
On August 17, 1971 Sara married Alvin Hammes at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kansas City; they made their home in Westwood with their daughter, Linda. The couple moved to Seneca after they retired, on April 15, 2000.
Sara was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joseph, Patrick and George; and four sisters, Kathleen, Lucy, Mary Jane and Joyce.
Sara is survived by her husband, Alvin, of 46 years; her daughter, Linda Hammes of Seneca; a brother, Dennis Habing of Teutopolis Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be given in Sara’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Church and/or the Nemaha County Training Center, sent in care of the family.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 Monday, August 6, 2018 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 7, 2017 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bailyville.

Aunt Sara was such a beautiful soul. She was a retired nurse, she was the youngest of a very large Midwestern family. She was my godmother. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew & loved her! She went on the Timberwolf with me when I was 7, my first roller coaster ever. She made the best fudge at Christmas time. She wasn’t afraid to ask difficult questions to inspire those who she loved to be better people… She was a big advocate for women and children issues. Her Catholic faith was always very important, as was her family. She reached out across states to stay connected to everyone. Rest In Peace Aunt Sara…. we love you!!!
God keep Sara with such a Christian spark to keep the world around her upbeat and smiling!

Aunt Sara was always such a blessing and inspiration to all of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her enthusiasm and energy were infectious. She had a way of making everyone feel special and important and she always put everyone else before herself. She lived her Christian faith through the love and care of others and especially her family. I am so proud to have been her namesake and I know that heaven is rejoicing in its’ newest angel! We will always miss you Aunt Sara!
