Lola Fern Hubbard Droge

Lola Fern (Hubbard} Droge of Seneca, KS died September 7, 2020 at the age of 100.

She was born at home with her twin Lois on October 16, 1919, to E Russell and Mabel Clark Hubbard.  They were the middle children of twelve and lived on a farm near Leoti in western Kansas. After graduating in 1937 as salutatorian, from Wichita County HS, Leoti, KS, Lola went to work for the Wichita Co AAA office for the federal government agriculture program to earn money for college.

In 1939 she attended one year at KSU (Kansas State College of Agriculture). There Lola met her future husband Leslie A Droge of Seneca, KS. She moved to Denver and worked for the Montgomery Ward warehouse.

Lola Hubbard and Leslie Droge were married January 26, 1941. June 1941 Leslie entered the military and soon after America entered WWII. They traveled to several US Army bases including Ft Leavenworth, Ft Leonard Wood, MO, Ft Benning, GA and Camp Blanding, FL. When Les left for the Philippines, she moved to Flagler, CO, with her 2 children, where her parents now lived. In 1947, Leslie and Lola and family moved to Leslie’s family home in Nemaha Township north of Seneca where they maintained a livestock and grain operation. Lola lived in this house the rest of her life.

To this union was born 5 children Dennis Droge, Vliets, KS; Joann Freeborn, Concordia, KS; Doug, Seneca, KS; Dr Duane (Bobbie) Eureka, KS and Beverly Droge, Ozawkie, KS. Lola’s living grandchildren are Chris Droge, Assaria, KS; Lt Col Jennifer Droge, Dupont, WA; Wendy Malm, Lawrence, KS; Sue Sillin, Sterling, KS; Bob Freeborn, Lindsborg, KS; Catherine Knapp, Seneca, KS; Joseph Freeborn, Concordia, KS; Betsy Droge, Topeka, KS; Ben Droge, Ozawkie, KS; Toren Droge, Anchorage, AK; and Jake Droge, Houston, TX. Lola has 35 Great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Lola has been an active member of Frieden’s UCC where she taught Sunday school and was the first woman to serve on the church council, 4H leader, member of County Extension Service FCE woman’s study group, Daughter of the American Revolution DAR Reavis Ashley Chapter of Falls City, NE where she served 3 terms as chapter Regent. Lola was an auxiliary member of the Gideon’s International and the American Legion. Leslie was a Kansas State Senator for 12 years and Lola was an active member of the county Republican Women.

After retirement, Lola and Leslie traveled throughout the USA in an RV visiting their many relatives, touring, joining the Good Sam Camper Group and attending Army reunions. In addition, they traveled to Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Africa, Kenya, Australia, Belgium, France, and Germany. Lola was a wonderful homemaker, hostess and was an artist with a needle. Most of her family received embroidery or crewel work by her hand.

She is preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings Vernon, Dean, Carter, George, Leon, Eldon and Sidney Hubbard, Nona Stanbury, Lois Thompson, Opal Einsphar, and Erma Dent and her husband Leslie, her grandson George Droge, great granddaughter Hannah Freeborn, and son-in-law Warren Freeborn.

Funeral services will be October 3, 2020 at 11am Friedens UCC, Bern, KS. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery

Memorials are for and can be sent in care of the family, Charity Gideon’s International and Friedens UCC

    Lola was a very talented and creative person. She always had a smile on her face and did not know a stranger. She was willing to lend a hand where needed. She was a respected person in the community. She will be greatly missed. May all the happy memories you have of Lola help ease the pain at this difficult time. God Bless.

    ,What wonderful MEMORIES SHARED at the Droge home! Overnight stays with Bev- riding horses even though Tonka was barn sour!! Which was an event I’ll remember- Lola was such a great mom and always made me feel at home- such a great cook- loved the booth in the kitchen and having to crawl under the table to get out because there was no moving those tall drink of water Droge boys!! My sympathy & love
