Albert H. Niehues

Goff, KS

Albert H. Niehues, 89, of Goff, KS, died just before midnight Wednesday evening, February 16, 2005, at his home southeast of Kelly, KS. He had been in failing health for several years after suffering a stroke in 1993.

He was born May 13, 1915, on the family homestead southeast of Kelly, the son of Bernard, Sr. and Mary Knipper Niehues. He attended St. Bede’s School in Kelly, helped on the family farm, and later farmed east of Kelly.

On May 4, 1943, he married Dolores “Peg” Grollmes at St. Bede’s Church. They lived on the farm east of Kelly until the spring of 1944 when they moved to their present farm southeast of Kelly. After his stroke in 1993, his family had cared for him in their home during his long illness.

He was a member of St. Bede’s Church in Kelly, where he served on the church committee. He also served on the Kelly School Board, District #21 in the early 1960s. Albert loved farming. He and his wife raised cattle and hogs, and operated a dairy.

Survivors are his wife Dolores “Peg” of the home; five sons, Glen of Wetmore, and Wayne, Max, Marvin and Thomas, all of Goff; two daughters, Mary Koch of Centralia and Doris Haug of Vermillion; two brothers, Edwin Niehues of Goff and Robert Niehues, Sr. of Seneca; five sisters, Sr. Richardis Niehues, O.S.B. of Atchison, Margaret Boeckman of Onaga, Antoinette Hermesch of Seneca, Josepha Altenhofen of Kelly, and Evelyn Hutfles of Topeka; 36 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard “Ben”, Jr., John J., and George F. Niehues; and four sisters, Agnes Niehues (an infant), Alma Haverkamp, Anna Niehues and Erma Niehues.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given for St. Bede’s Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
