Alda A. Wassenberg

Seneca, KS

08/24/1921 - 10/09/2007

Surrounded by her loving family, after a valiant battle with cancer, Alda A. Block Wassenberg left this world to rest with her Lord in Heaven on Tuesday, October 9, 2007.

Alda was born on August 24, 1921 to Francis and Bertha Block in Seneca, KS. On August 27, 1941, she married Edmund A. “Wassie” Wassenberg at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca; they celebrated 45 years of marriage in 1986. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1988.

After marriage, the couple lived north of Kelly. In 1943, her husband co-owned Wassenberg-Sudbeck Truck Line. The couple moved to Seneca in 1946, when her husband went into the construction business, Wassenberg Construction. Then after the death of her beloved husband, she moved to Topeka in 1992 to be closer to her children.

She is survived by her six children, Roger (Nancy) Wassenberg of Shawnee, KS; Marilyn Campbell of Albuquerque, NM; Bob (Sue) Wassenberg, Judy Gudenkauf, Patti (Jim) Allen, all of Topeka; and Donna (Dana) Severy of Santa Barbara, CA.

Alda found extreme joy in her grand- and great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Leah Campbell Kirklin; Leslie Campbell McGeoy; Rob Campbell; Heather and Wade Wassenberg; Cassie Wassenberg Collar; Ian and Aaron Gudenkauf; Derick and Dylan Allen; and Madison Severy. She also had seven great-grandchildren; four step-granddaughters; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Surviving siblings are Helen Hammes of Seneca; Bea Fitzpatrick Iowa City, IA; Bill Block of Leawood; and Grace Strathman of Seneca.

Besides her husband Ed, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Alma Randall; and a brother, Francis Block.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday, October 12, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given for either Heart of America Hospice, 3715 SW 29th Street, Topeka, KS 66614; or the Topeka Association for Retarded Citizens, 2701 SW Randolph, Topeka, KS 66611.
