Alice M. Kongs

Seneca, KS

Alice M. Kongs, of Lenexa, KS, formerly of Seneca, KS, died Friday, August 3, 2007 in Lenexa.

She was born August 28, 1927, on a farm southeast of Seneca, the daughter of William and Laurina Duethman Lackey. She attended Humphrey School and graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1945. Following graduation, she worked as a nurses aide at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

On July 10, 1946, she married Walter J. Kongs at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1982. They lived in Seneca where she worked as a clerk at the Big B grocery store for about 10 years. Later, she worked in the library at Nemaha Valley High School until retirement. Walt and Alice enjoyed dancing and entertaining relatives and friends at their home for patio BBQ’s and card games.

She was a member of Sts Peter & Paul Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church in Seneca. Alice’s passion was to care for her family and play golf. She was an avid golfer, President of the Ladies Golf Club, and was the club champion in Seneca for several years. She was also active in ceramics, needlepoint and card clubs.

Survivors include her three sons, Dr. Stephen Kongs of Albuquerque, NM, Daniel Kongs of Las Cruces, NM, and Timothy Kongs of Topeka; a daughter, Barbara Kongs Hake of Shawnee, KS; three brothers, Gerald and Hubert Lackey of Seneca and Gene Lackey of Lincoln, NE; a sister, Monica Stallbaumer of Overland Park, KS; and four grandchildren, Anna, Christa, Tyler and Nicole.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Remiga “Medge” Lierz on January 27, 1986.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 AM Tuesday, August 7, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given for American Cancer Society and sent in care of the family.
