Alta C. Nemec

Du Bois, NE

Alta C. Nemec, 96, of Du Bois, NE, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca, KS.

Alta was born on July 23, 1911 at the family home on the Kansas side of Nebraska state line, the daughter of Henry and Emilie Sostman Tegtmeier. She attended a rural county school in Kansas from 1st to 8th grade. She was confirmed on April 1, 1928 at Frieden’s Church in Bern after an entire year of catechism class at the church instead of regular school. She attended high school in Du Bois, playing the clarinet in the school band, and graduating in 1930. After high school, Alta cared for her mother who was in poor health.

On September 11, 1935, she married her high school sweetheart, Ivan Nemec. The couple made their home on a farm near Du Bois, where Alta lived for 72 years. She worked side by side with her husband on the farm. The couple celebrated 49 years of marriage before Ivan’s death in 1984.

Alta loved to be outdoors, especially “puttering” in her flowerbeds. She enjoyed riding horses, old movies, baking, crocheting, and tending to her African violets. Alta was an avid reader, reading numerous books per month. Alta and her husband enjoyed traveling, and visited all but three states in the U.S.; she also traveled to Canada, the Caribbean, Jamaica, and Mexico.

Alta was a member of the Du Bois Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was the junior superintendent. She served as Secretary/Treasurer on the Du Bois School Board for 12 years.

She is survived by her son Jack and his wife Nancy of Quincy, IL; a sister-in-law Vada Tegtmeier of Seneca; three grandchildren, Jennifer Nemec of Topeka, Jay and Jodi Nemec of Omaha, Tom and Kim Nemec of Normal, IL; and three great grandchildren, Max, Ethan and Nick Nemec of Omaha.

Beisdes her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Lottie Rohlmeier and her brother Henry Tegtmeier Jr.

Alta will lie in state at the Du Bois Methodist Church one hour prior to the funeral service, which will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 2. She will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Sunday after 1 PM.
