Andrew J. Wessel, 90, of Kelly, Kansas, died August 9, 2013 at Life Care Center in Seneca.

He was born May 28, 1923, on the Wessel family homestead southwest of Kelly, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Macke Wessel. He attended St. Bede’s School in Kelly. He helped run the family farm with his father until his father retired; he then continued at the family farm with his brother George.

On June 14, 1975, he married Georgie L. Reed Kenworthy at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. Georgie joined Andrew on the Wessel family farmed, where they farmed until retiring and moving into Seneca in June 2000. Georgie preceded him in death on March 15, 2001.

Andrew was a member of St. Bede’s Church in Kelly and the St. Joseph Society at the church; he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1769 in Seneca. He enjoyed bingo, bowling, cards, fishing and trips to the casino.

Besides his wife, Andrew was preceded in death by all his siblings, Henry Wessel on December 18, 1995, Francis Wessel on March 28, 2000, Mary Korte on June 9, 2000, Albert H. Wessel on April 15, 2001, George B. Wessel on February 4, 2010 and Rita Stuke on September 21, 2010.

Survivors are step-sons, George Kenworthy of Axtell and David Kenworthy of Cooper, Texas; a step-daughter, Willa Lee Meiries of Axtell; four step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 13, at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Monday, August 12, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given for St. Bede’s Church or St. Bede’s Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
