Betty Mae Shockey

Betty M Shockey, 77 of Seneca passed away peacefully on Dec 15, 2022, at Stormont Vail in
Topeka after a 25-day battle with COPD complications, with her family by her side.
Betty was born on May 1, 1945, to Jesse Earl and Bessie Irene Brown James at Fort Zimmons
Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She grew up as an Army brat due to her father being in the
military. The family traveled all over the US and even to Germany wherever he was stationed.
Eventually landing in San Jose, California. Betty graduated from James Lick High School and
attended 1 year at San Jose State College. She joined the Job Corp in Cleveland, OH then
returned home to San Jose, CA.
In the summer of 1967, she met Fred Shockey Jr in Mountain View, CA, they were married on
May 18, 1968, at the home of her mother in San Jose, CA. They made their home in Mountain
View, CA, then moved to Milpitis, CA where they were blessed with 3 children,
She worked at the Sylvania Corp in Mountain View, CA, as a Purchasing/receiving accountant,
until the birth of their 1st child. As the children grew up, she acted as the lunch monitor at Rose
Elementary School where they attended. Betty and Fred decided in 1979 to move the family
back to Fred’s hometown of Seneca, KS. After the kids were grown, she went to work at
Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca in the housekeeping Dept, where she worked
from 1996 until her retirement in 2008. She was disabled in 2009.
Betty loved spending time with her children and her many grandchildren. She also enjoyed
going to the Casino with her husband, playing bingo, doing puzzles and doing them online also,
and watching Fox News. She also loved being able to help others. So, after her death she was
an organ donor.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Fred Shockey Jr only 2 months prior to
her own death (2022). Also, by her parents Jesse (1966) and Bessie (2008), her brother-in-law
Edward Van Tuyl (2012), her son in law Clarence Tryon (2017) and her daughter in law Felicia
Shockey (2018).
Betty is survived by her children Irene (Jerry) Koelzer of Corning, Sandra Tryon of Seneca and
Fred (Janel) Shockey III of Shawnee, KS. 2 sisters Patricia VanTuyl and Rebecca (Pete) Storz
both of San Jose, CA. She is also survived by 17 Grandkids, 25 Great Grandkids and 20 Great
Great Grandkids with 1 on the way.
There will be a joint funeral for both Fred and Betty Shockey Jr. The Visitation and funeral will
be held at the Lauer’s Funeral Home in Seneca on Wednesday, Dec 21, 2022. Visitation will be
at 10am and the funeral will be at 11am with burial in the Seneca City Cemetery following the
funeral.
