Carl F. Tanking

Carl F. Tanking, 94, of Seneca, KS, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at a Seneca care home where he had been a resident for five days.

He was born October 31, 1907, on the family farm northeast of Seneca, a twin son, and one of 10 children born to William and Agnes Klunenberg Tanking. He grew up there, attended Sts. Peter & Paul School in Seneca, worked on the family farm, and helped local farmers shuck corn and cut firewood. He was a lifetime farmer and stockman.

On April 8, 1931, he married Mildred A. “Millie” Winkler at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They lived and farmed east of Seneca and south of Centralia before moving to a farm south of Baileyville in 1944. They retired and moved to Seneca in 1969. They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and had been married for over 70 years at the time of his death. His wife Millie survives of the home.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, the St. Joseph Society at the church, and the Knights of Columbus Council #1769, all in Seneca. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. He was also a member of the Farmers Union and had served on the Center Township Board. He received the Banker’s Award for Soil Conservation.

Carl loved fishing, and often fished together with his wife Millie.

Survivors besides his wife are a son, Leonard Tanking of Vermillion; two daughters, Patricia Dalinghaus of Seneca and Joan Boyd of Olathe; a sister, Rosie Minor of Sabetha; five granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Carl Tanking on January 10, 1936; five brothers, Paul (his twin), Albert, Edward, Lawrence “Doc”, and an infant, Raymond; three sisters, Laurentia “Mickey” Peppersack, and infants, Bernardine and Rosalia.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 PM Sunday, with a vigil prayer service at 7 PM Sunday, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School or Sacred Heart Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
