Edith Mary (Osterhaus) Kongs, 89, of Manhattan, KS, and formerly of Wetmore, KS, died June 24, 2017, at Stoneybrook Assisted Living and Memory Care in Manhattan, KS.
Edith was born on September 10, 1927, in Seneca, Kansas, the daughter of Bernard J. and Pauline (Runnebaum) Osterhaus.
On February 11, 1947, she married William A. Kongs, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, KS. They lived and farmed south of Seneca and south of Wetmore from 1947 till 1994. Edith was a homemaker and worked at the Wetmore High School as a cook. Her homemade cinnamon rolls were known as the best in Nemaha County. Bill and Edith resided in Wetmore, KS, before moving to Stoneybrook Assisted Living and Memory Care, Manhattan KS.
Edith was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was involved with the Altar Society. She served as a 4-H leader along with her husband. She enjoyed quilting and various handiwork. She loved visiting her family, loving her five great-grandchildren and playing cards.
She is is survived by four daughters, Diane (DeNoon) (Tom) Hawk of Manhattan, KS, Kathy (Chris) Callaway of Scottsdale, Arizona, Beverly Fowler of Scottsdale, Arizona and Nancy (Joe) Rottinghaus of Hutchinson, KS; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Nicole DeNoon (Kaden and Kenzie,) Garden City, KS, Lindsey and Matt Dewell (Gavin,Payton) Olathe, KS, Amy Callaway, Cedar Park, TX, LeaAnn Callaway, Albuquerque, NM, Ashley and Joe (Jack) Yeargan, (Jack) Phoenix, AZ, Kylie and Bart Petrini, Ft. Worth ,TX, Kristen Rottinghaus, Lawrence, KS, Tyler and April Rottinghaus, McKinney, TX and Stacy Rottinghaus, Hutchinson, KS.
Edith and Bill were married 65 years before his death on January 15, 2013, she is also preceded in death by her father, Bernard on March 4, 1983; her mother, Pauline on September 6, 1975; two brothers, Leonard Osterhaus on April 16, 1958 and Gilbert Osterhaus on February 21, 2012; three sisters, Lucille Winkler on June 14, 2013, Bernice Rettele on May 26, 2007 and Edna “Eddy” Love on November 22, 2013; and by a son-in-law, Fred DeNoon on July 22, 2004.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at St Bede’s Catholic Church, Kelly, KS. The rosary will be at 10:00 A.M., prior to the Mass. Her viewing will be Monday, June 26, 2017 at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca,KS. She will be buried next to her husband in St. Bede’s Catholic Cemetery at Kelly, KS.
Memorial may be given to the St. Bede’s Altar Society, sent in care of the family.
