Evelyn E. “Betty” Broxterman

Seneca, Kansas

10/14/1928 - 10/07/2022

Evelyn E. “Betty” Broxterman, 93, of Seneca, died peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital surrounded by her family.

Betty was born on October 14, 1928, to Lebert and Marie Gallagher Mitchell.  Betty attended Carrol Country School through the eighth grade.  She attended Seneca High for the first two years and Axtell High for the final two years of high school. After graduation in 1947, she was employed by local families to help with their growing families.

In the choir of St. Bridget Church, she first saw the man she would eventually marry, Leonard (Bud) Broxterman.  On a beautiful fall Tuesday, September 14, 1948, they were married at St. Bridget Church with a celebration at the Mitchell family home.

For the first couple years, Bud and Betty lived in the St. Bridget hills, then moved six miles north of Baileyville. An opportunity arose for them to purchase a farm on the Kansas / Nebraska state line where they lived, loved, farmed and raised their family.  In 1989, they sold the farm and retired, moving to Baileyville.

Betty was employed at Campbell Soup Company, Tecumseh, Nebraska, from 1972-1984.  She later worked at Teddy Bear Day Care. On June 20, 1990, the love of her life, Bud, passed away. Betty loved to bake, sew, piece quilt tops, grow vegetables and flowers, and be there for her children.  She had a great love for God, attending Mass regularly and praying the Rosary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud (June 20, 1990), her father, Lebert (February 13, 1980), her mother, Marie (January 1, 1999), her sister, Darlene Lierz (April 1, 2011), her brothers: Harold (March 15, 2014), William (February 7, 1936), and Kenneth (May 17, 1937), a great grandson, Emry Plasha (February 28, 2022), son-in-law, Alan H. Stallbaumer (September 17, 1992), and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Wagner Broxterman (October 13, 2016),

Betty is survived by her eight children, Sandy Stallbaumer (Seneca), Leon Broxterman (Sabetha), Lyle (Vikki) Broxterman (Fairview), Gary (Vicki) Broxterman (Axtell), Marilyn (Jim) Graf (Sabetha), Vicki Appelhans (Manhattan), Tammy (Mark) Skoch (Baileyville), and Stan (Susan) Broxterman (Axtell).  She is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren, sixty great grandchildren with one expected soon, and eight great, great grandchildren with one expected soon.  A brother, Donald (Rose Ann) Mitchell (Topeka) and sister-in-law, JoAnn Mitchell (Seneca).

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, October 10, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
