Evelyn M. Burdiek

Evelyn M. (Broxterman) Burdiek, 82, of Seneca, KS, died Monday morning, May 24, 2010, at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca, with loving family members at her side.
She was born on March 11, 1928, to Fred and Clara Lierz Broxterman on a farm northeast of Baileyville. She attended Star Country School until 4th Grade and then went to Sacred Heart Catholic School in Baileyville. Evelyn was employed by the Elmer Winterscheidt family in their home prior to marriage.
Evelyn married Gerald A. Burdiek on February 18, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. They resided at Bern for the first three years of their married life; before moving to Lillis in 1953. They moved to Seneca in 1963; where the couple farmed, raised cattle and hogs and celebrated 59 years of marriage. Evelyn was employed at Countryview Estates in the dietary department for 30 years until she was needed to stay home and care for her husband who had Parkinson’s. He preceded her in death on October 26, 2009.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society and the Happy Hours Card Club, all in Seneca, and she was a former member of Sacred Heart Church & St. Anne’s Altar Society in Baileyville. Evelyn enjoyed many hobbies which included baking, flowers, gardening, playing cards, embroidery and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her 10 children, Nancy (Terry) Henson of Nortonville, KS, Karen (Larry) Osterhaus, Sheryl (Robert) Nordhus, Diane (Donald) Lueger and Duane (Lori) Burdiek, all of Seneca, Ronald (Joyce) Burdiek of Wetmore, Joyce (Larry) Russell of Topeka, Lynn (Jeanette) Burdiek of Emporia, Mary (Richard) Schoenfeld of Manhattan and Marcia (Alan) Gyhra of Burchard, NE; three brothers, Gilbert, Cletus, and Daniel Broxterman, all of Baileyville; a sister, Maxine Strathman of Seneca; 35 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon Gyhra in 1995, her parents, and her siblings, Rita Burdiek, Mildred Haug, Mary Ann Holthaus, Maleta Gress and Galen Broxterman.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday, May 25, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, May 26, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville.
Memorials may be given in Evelyn’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Nature Playground and/or Coins For A Cause (an organization helping local cancer patients).
