Herman “Henry” Rottinghaus, 68, of rural St. Benedict, Kansas, died early Thursday morning, September 1, 1932 at the Missouri-Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. He had been ill for the previous week and was admitted to the hospital on August 25.

“Henry” as he was known, was born in Rottinghausen, Damme, Oldenburg, Germany, on July 10, 1864, and emigrated alone to this country in 1884. He first lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was in the dairy business and drove a dairy truck. He came to Kansas in 1894, near St. Benedict, and engaged in farm labor.

He was married to Maria (Mary) Anna Sudbeck on April 14, 1896 at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. They lived their 36 years of marriage on a farm north of St. Benedict.

Henry was a successful farmer who accumulated many acres of fine farm land in the area. His wife Mary survives of the home.

Besides his wfie, he is survived by his children, Tony and his wife Nora Rottinghaus, Wilhemina “Minnie” and husband Jacob Rennenger, and Benedict, John I., and Ignatius Rottinghaus, all of St. Benedict; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Osterhaus, and three infant daughters.

Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday morning, September 3, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, officiated by Fr. Gregory, O.S.B.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews: George and Paul Fangmann, Frank Kohake, Frank and Barney Runnebaum and Henry Macke. Honorary pallbearers were neighbors: Matt McCaffrey, Tony Haug, George and John Schmitz, Allie Stallbaumer and John Rilinger.
