John Cyprian Nordhus
Seneca, Kansas

John Cyprian Nordhus, 100, of Seneca, died Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
John was born on August 26, 1921, on a farm near Seneca, to Henry and Josephine Waller Nordhus. John attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School thru the 6th grade, then he went to Triumph Country School for 7th & 8th grade. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul High School for his freshman and sophomore year; and then went to help his father farm.
On August 10, 1949, John married Bernice Haug at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas.
John loved nature and was a farmer and considered himself a caretaker of the land. He did custom combining, worked at Curt’s Service Station, drove for Alf Roeder for 11 years, was a carrier for the Courier Tribune for 19 years and was employed by Ralph Poteet Insulation. John loved to fish, play pool, golf, plant and tend to a garden, play cards, grow Christmas trees, have coffee at McDonalds’ and listen to Molly B and Big Joe Polka and Daniel O’Donnell.
John was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, St. Joseph Society, the Adoration Hour at Sts. Peter and Paul and the Knights of Columbus Council #1769 in Seneca.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughters, Jane Nordhus on April 24, 1994 and Julie Glissman on January 26, 2010; a grandson, Jason Nolte on June 21, 2014; a son-in-law, Christopher Ashcraft on July 7, 1992; and his siblings, Margaret Stallbaumer on February 7, 2005, Sylvester Nordhus on June 14, 2010, Rita Keith on June 2, 2012, Mary Macke, on September 10, 2017 and Theresa Heiman on December 6, 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Bernice; his children, Bob (Sheryl) Nordhus of Seneca, Mary Lynn (Arland) Stephens of Norwich, Kansas, Diane (Jim) Schultejans of Corning, Debra (Sam) Hermesch of Seneca, Bill Nordhus of Seneca, Kathleen (Bob) Nolte of Seneca, John (Barb) Nordhus of Seneca, Tom (Melissa) Nordhus of Commerce City, Colorado, Jerry (Karen) Nordhus of Bern and Sharon (David) Shumaker of Wetmore; 39 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 7 PM on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM on Tuesday, October 19, 2020 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery, next to his daughters.
Memorials may be left in his memory to Coins for a Cause, sent in care of the family.

My deepest sympathies. What a life well lived. I look at the younger pictures of John & his siblings & see so many of his grandkid’s faces.
My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Missed getting my birdhouse gourds from him the last few years!
Our deepest sympathy goes out to Bernice and all of the kids and their families. What a great life, well lived by a man who was blessed to have had such a wonderful wife and family. I will always remember Johnny as a happy man, who smiled and laughed a lot. He will be missed!
