Joseph A. "Joe" Burdick

Seneca, KS

Joseph A. “Joe” Burdick, 96, of Seneca, KS, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He was transferred there from Country View Estates Care Home where he had been a resident since October 2001.

He was born August 25, 1906, the son of Henry and Berdiena Feldkamp Burdick on a farm southwest of Seneca. He attended the Diamond School, Sts. Peter & Paul School, and worked on the family farm.

On September 13, 1933, he married Rose M. Tangeman at St. Mary’s Church at St. Benedict. They lived and farmed on the Burdick homestead. Joe raised cattle, farmed, and operated a small dairy. In 1983 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His wife Rose preceded him in death on March 28, 1993. Joe moved into Seneca in the summer of 1993.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, St. Joseph Society at the church, and the Knights of Columbus #1769 for over 60 years, all at Seneca.

Survivors are three sons, Wilfred Burdick of Payson, AZ, Alden Burdick of Springfield, FL, and James Burdick of Raymore, MO; two daughters, Gladys Hutfles of Pasco, WA and Janice Franks of St. John, IN; a sister, Anna Kruse of St. Joseph, MO; and 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son Joseph on July 8, 1939; four brothers, John on December 3, 1964, Ben on December 17, 1978, Frank on October 10, 1979, and Fr. Fabian on March 20, 2003; and two sisters, Sr. Julitta, O.S.B. on November 19, 1993 and Elizabeth Ronnebaum on June 15, 1928.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Knights of Columbus rosary will be prayed at 2 PM and a vigil prayer service will be offered at 7 PM Tuesday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where he will lie in state after 8:30 AM Tuesday.

Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School Building Fund, and sent in care of the family.
