June E. Stubbings Sheldon, 96, of Pawnee City, Nebraska (formerly of Topeka, Kansas), died August 16, 2013 at the Pawnee Manor Nursing Home in Pawnee City.
June was born August 10, 1917, in Topeka, the daughter of Samuel Harris and Dessa Shaw Stubbings. She attended public schools in Topeka, and Kansas City, Kansas as well as Little Rock, Arkansas. She graduated from Little Rock High School in 1935. She continued her education at Little Rock Junior College, Emporia State University, Washburn University and the University of Kansas. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Kansas.
June began teaching in Shawnee County schools in 1937, four years at Kaw Valley Schools and two years at Dawson School. She became a classroom teacher in Topeka Public Schools in 1949. She later became a Remedial Reading Specialist and taught in Topeka Schools as a Title I Reading Clinic Teacher. She also tutored reading students in her home for many years. June retired in 1980.
June married E. Temple Sheldon on July 3, 1943, in Central Park Christian Church in Topeka. June was a 80 year member of Central Park Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school, Bible School and was a member of the Builders’ Class. She served the church as a Deaconess, Elder for 26 years, Chairman of the Board, a member of the choir; as well as, a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
June was a member of the Topeka Area Retired Teachers Association, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. She belonged to the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa for 40 years. She was a former member of the Topeka Woman’s Club, where she served in several offices and was a past editor of their monthly news letter.
June loved to read, crochet, play the piano and sing, play bridge, and write poetry. Her poetry was often found in monthly newsletters of her various clubs, and in the church bulletins. She was a prolific letter writer and kept constant contact with her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, E. Temple Sheldon; and her sister, Audrey Stubbings Dial.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan J. (Gerald) Young of Redlands, California; a son, Dr. Michael H. (DeJay) Sheldon of Pawnee City, Nebraska; a brother, H. Kent (Elizabeth) Stubbings of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren, Edward T. (Carla) Young, Laura S. Young, Jeffery P. Sheldon and Erin (Andrew) Bunton, two great-grandchildren, Lexi J. Young and Levi T. Young, five nephews and three nieces who will remember her strength and love.
A memorial funeral service is planned at the Central Park Christian Church in Topeka on November 2, 2013 at 11:00 a. m. with a gravesite inurnment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorials may be left to Pawnee Manor Nursing Home or The American Diabetes Association.
