Louis S. Hurla

Louis S. Hurla, 93, of Holton, KS, formerly of Seneca, died Thursday, October 11, 2007 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.
Louis was born on a farm in Delia, KS on October 22, 1913 to Louis Mark and Margaret Salisbury Hurla, one of 11 children. He attended the country school in Delia, and then helped on the family farm. In 1934, he went to Kansas City and took a job with a steel scrape company, before purchasing a gas station in Kansas City.
He married Pauline Argo of Delia, in Kansas City on June 6, 1935. In 1941, the couple moved to a farm near Holton, and Louis worked at Anderson and Oxendale Rock Crushing Company. In 1951, they moved to Seneca and Louis worked for the quarry as a superintendent. He then worked for Goodyear in Topeka, and owned several gas stations in Seneca. In addition, he operated trucks to haul rock to Seneca and the surrounding area.
Louis became the Seneca City Engineer in 1960 until his retirement in June of 1979. The couple moved to Holton in 1980, and Louis lost his wife on August 31, 1985. Louis continued to live in Holton until he returned to Seneca this August for nursing home care.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Holton. He took pleasure in playing cards, bowling and dancing.
Survivors include his daughter, Virginia Brinker of Topeka; five sons, Louis of Liberty MO, Robert of Leavenworth, Steven of Kansas City, Gerald of Fulton, MO and David of Valley Falls; a sister, Margaret Hurla Fricke of Scottsdale, AZ; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Philip, and nine siblings.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 PM Sunday, October 14, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, and at 7 PM Sunday at St. Dominic’s Church in Holton. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Monday at St. Dominic’s in Holton. Burial will be in the Holton cemetery.
Memorials may be given for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, and sent in care of the family.
