I weighed about 98 pounds when I was out for football my freshman year. I’m guessing Mike was around 170. He was also very fast. One day at practice I was at outside linebacker with a hand-held blocking dummy, probably about 3 feet in length. On one play Mike was the blocking back on a sweep. He comes barreling around the corner and launches himself into me. I was not merely knocked down, I was sent flying, absolutely airborne, traveling a great distance backwards. My brother Ron saw the play and remembers it to this day. I know that if the internet and cell phone cameras were around at that time the video would have gone viral. Fortunately, I was unhurt. When Mike was a senior our team was undefeated and ended up #1 in the state. He and Jerry Claas, a wide receiver, tied as team leaders in touchdowns scored, with each tallying eleven. Mike was a tremendous athlete and, more importantly, a heck of a nice guy. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
