Nellie Louise Kaster

Axtell, KS

06/23/1947 - 08/30/2010

Nellie Louise Shockey Kaster, 63, of Axtell, KS, died unexpectedly Monday night, August 30, 2010 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Louise, as she was known, was born on June 23, 1947 in Onaga to Frederick and Lorena Sanders Shockey, Sr. She began her schooling in Havensville; the family moved to Seneca, and she graduated from Seneca Public High School. After graduation, she moved to California and stayed with family, and later moved to Tecumseh, NE.

Louise married Gary Kaster in January 1968 at the Tecumseh Lutheran Church. They had two children, Cindy and Michael. The couple later divorced.

Louise was employed by the Campbell Soup Company in Tecumseh from 1967 to 1975. She also worked in the laundry department of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Beatrice, NE. In 1977 she returned to Seneca, where she was a stay-at-home mother, and was in a committed relationship with Larry Nash. To this union two daughters were born, Denise and Michelle. In 1991 Louise and Larry moved to Axtell. Larry preceded her in death on December 30, 2006.

Louise worked for Good Shepherd’s Village and Life Care Center of Seneca. In 1999, she was forced to retire due to declining health. Louise looked forward to her annual summer visits to Arkansas and Missouri where she would visit family. She enjoyed game shows, crafts, sewing, raising a vegetable garden, and collecting a little bit of everything. Not only was Louise a giving person while living, she made her last act of giving after her death, by donating her organs.

She leaves behind her children, Cindy Kaster of Summerfield, KS, Michael Kaster of Axtell, Denise McGinnis of Axtell, and Michelle Nash of Axtell; her brothers Fred Shockey of Seneca, Bill Shockey of Goff, Lyle Shockey of Seneca, Terry Shockey of Pine Bluff, AR and Gary Shockey of Sacramento, CA; her sisters, Darlene McAuliffe of Humboldt, NE, Freda Galer of Holton, KS, and Maxine Clemmer of Bolivar, MO; and 5 grandchildren, Danielle Lyons, Victoria McGinnis, Eli McGinnis, Jesse McGinnis and Orianna Pearl Kaster.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM Friday, September 3, at the American Legion Building in Axtell. Burial will be a later late. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
